Lyre, Lyre: Singing with Xena & Gabrielle

My Xena rewatch reached Lyre, Lyre, Hearts on Fire tonight, it's a campy battle of the bands with Disco Amazons, where did they get some of the ideas from?

But beneath all the sparkle, it’s pure Xena. Love, joy, and resilience shine through, and smack in the middle of it is Gabrielle. Watching her dance, sing, and spar with Xena with that easy chemistry? Pure magic. Watching it back in 2000, young me felt like she was getting permission: to love, be playful, and be herself.

The episode also shows Gabrielle’s strength. Enter Draco, her persistent stalker, who refuses to take “no” for an answer. Gabrielle asserts herself clearly and fearlessly ,she is not interested and escapes his trap on her own. Watching her do that as a teen gave me chills. She sets boundaries, takes control, and refuses to be intimidated. That courage is golden sequins-level epic.

Then there…

aye, looking forward to this one though trying not to skip ahead in my rewatch though 🫣😜. Just got up to the end of season 4 and loving this show to bits all over again, i'm so glad its back in my life and its helping me get through this tough time that for sure. Just watched Ides of March and Gabrielle going berserk when Xena's cut down and killing 8 soldiers in less than 90 secs is one hell of way to stray from the path of peace n love 🫨 😍, still packs a punch that ending. Now on to one of my other faves, Fallen Angel which is just as superb now as it was then 😎.

just wanted to add thanks again to the siterunners, watching this all upscaled is brilliant 😎, and i very much appreciate the subtitles as find it difficult to hear the dialogue at times these days and the DVDs don't have subtitles. I'll send some more donation to the site when I get paid just for those alone!

When Fates Align

Hello fellow fans of Xena!

I just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself, give a little background and share my Xena journey.

For safety purposes, I'll be going by Joxenar, and it is great to meet all of you. Truly.

I'm going to be real honest, I didn't know Xena existed until certain things I watched put it on my radar, still I never looked further into it, so it became an out of sight out of mind show. It took meeting my battling bard to even give it the time of day. It took a few tries for me to make it past episode 3 in season 1, in fact it took me a total of about 2 years to watch the whole show. (I started in 2023.)

But I enjoyed every bit of it.

It was a ride for sure. During the whole Dahak arc and…

I have allways been a battling bard seeking a Warrior Princess 😊, always loved how the community tends to split in to Xena inspired and Gabrielle inspired while at the same time loving both. Very glad you found a place to belong 💚

30 Years with Gabrielle: How Xena Shaped My Life.

Yesterday marked 30 years since Xena: Warrior Princess first aired. It’s hard to believe so much time has passed, because the show still feels like part of me, not just something I watched, but something that helped me grow into the woman I am today.

When the series ended in 2001, I was sixteen, right on the cusp of adulthood. I was still figuring out who I was, and what kind of life I wanted to live. Looking back now, I realise that Gabrielle was more than just my favourite character; she was a guide, a role model, and, in many ways, the spark that set me on the path toward becoming a writer and activist.

What moved me most about Gabrielle was her capacity to love, and the lengths she would go for her soulmate. Time and again, she sacrificed everything, her safety, her comfort, even her ideals at…

Yeah, Gabrielle does shine through in this post. A well chosen set of role models for sure.

Happy 30th Anniversary!!!

happy 30th anniversary everyone! how is everyone celebrating? i may listen to some of the soundtrack CDs later :)

i found xena by pure chance one day when i was bored and decided to see if there were ANY shows on hulu that started with the letter "x"... this was back in 2016, when yes, there was! and it was xena!

i was already a superfan of wicked with elphaba and glinda, so yes, the likely promise of another brunette x blonde duo (winkwink) spiked me curious. and i was immediately hooked. xena was something i had never quite seen before. it was campy, it was fun, it was dramatic, and it was heart-breaking. from the first season alone i could already see and feel the amount of love that had gone into making this series, from the elaborate sets and costumes to the sheer number of extras that helped…

The moment of impact!

Hi! Sorry if I make mistakes while writing, English is not my first language!

I was wondering, what was your first contact with the show? Yesterday I was talking about it with a friend and she asked me: “Do you think watching this changed you?” And, well…

I was born in 1993 and I’m from Spain. Back in the 90s, Xena was on TV here and I remember it was really successful — at least in the south of Spain (Andalucía). And, obviously, at least in my house, hahahaha.

I remember watching the show with my mum when I was about 6 or 7. She loved it! Then I grew up and forgot about the show until one day, when I was 13 and didn’t know anything about myself yet (ah… the wonderful teenage phase…), I was walking to the kitchen, passed through the living room and saw that my mum…

XWP hit me in the UK in 1997 when i was in my early 20's, though i'd seen Xena in the seen the HTLJ 3 eps 'arc' before that so when they said there would be a Xena spin off, I was so damn happy 😀

Watched it all on the first run, that ending still makes me sad! Overall it was the best thing on TV for me back then (as Babylon 5 had just finished 😛 ). Had some good times mimicking the fight scenes with my mates back then too when we were all a bit more energetic, twiddling swords n staffs n such. The Xena sword I had back then was fun to wield, pity it got pinched a while back but i just bought a replacement hehe ⚔️. Doing the dance number at the end of Tale of Two Muses with my mates was a blast too 😆.

I'd not watched it for some years but now i'm in my early 50s and remembering TV I used to love (my memory is getting bad of late for new stuff, so i been looking back instead). Been recently giving a long overdue rewatch and feel like i'm seeing it again for the first time, it's still utterly brilliant and so much fun 😀. I love those two to bits 🥰. Just starting going thru season 1 on DVD now after watching what I remember where my faves at the time so i can see all seasons/episodes in order. Ah, falling for Gabrielle yet again, hehe 😍.

Nice to see forums are still a thing too, so i thought i'd join 👍. Also glad in the intervening years i see there's been soundtracks released so i'll pick those up soon, so glad the end tune of Tale of Two Muses (Everybody Dance Now) is available as a track as it still makes me dance even after all this time 🕺.

Still adore When Fates Collide

Always felt it would have made a better final episode, Gabrielle destroys the loom of the fates for her soulmate and they ride off together for a new adventures. I would have really happy with that

Gabrielle’s Heteronormative Nightmare - A Married With Fishsticks reappraisal

For years I thought Married with Fishsticks was one of the worst episodes of Xena: Warrior Princess, but having rewatched and reflected on it, I see something else.

What once looked like pointless nonsense now feels like one of the strangest, most subversive episodes of the series. In fact, I’ve come to read it as Gabrielle’s queer feminist nightmare; a hallucination where she’s forced into Betty Friedan’s Feminine Mystique.

When Gabrielle wakes up in this fishy suburban dreamworld, she’s saddled with a “husband” she doesn’t know or want. She’s expected to smile, cook, fit in, and keep up appearances for the neighbors. The whole thing is played with a laugh-track energy, but it’s suffocating in a way that feels intentional. This is Friedan’s “problem with no name”, the malaise of being told that housewifery and marriage are the pinnacle of fulfilment, even when they feel empty. Only here, it’s played…
